On 29 November 1943, Messerschmitt Bf 109, a single-engined fighter aircraft, with Werknummer 27100 of the Luftwaffe, crashed into the IJsselmeer at this location. During a major dogfight with American fighters escorting bombers on the return flight from a mission to Bremen, the aircraft was hit. The pilot, from the II. Gruppe of Jagdgeschwader 3 and stationed at Schiphol, failed to leave the shot down aircraft.

Crew

  • Pilot: Fritz Kostenbader, Unteroffizier, 20 years old

 

Kostenbader was salvaged in November 1962 and buried at the German military cemetery in Ysselsteyn (Limburg).
